For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If
anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. For we hear that some
among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. Now such
persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their
work quietly and to earn their own living.
2 Thessalonians 3:10-12

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making
the best use of the time, because the days are evil.
Ephesians 5:15-16

“You’re Doing Too Much”

Someone told me this not too long ago.

I want to breakdown this statement to you as a reader. I will be focusing on both sides of this statement because there is truth to both sides. The point of this writing is to show you that they applied it incorrectly.

I find it funny that the majority of people who comment the most about people making many moves are the ones that are the most unproductive. They say you’re doing too much and I say they are not doing enough. They literally have decided to take a break from their lives to comment on your own. This shows me that they do not value their time nor mine because I don’t have time to hear it. I recently turned 22, this past April, and for my age I definitely do a lot. I can honestly sit down and tell you that I have a lot on my plate. The question is-is it TOO much ?

I would say not. I truly believe that God desires for us to cultivate ourselves in a way that we take full advantage of our time here on earth. Many people ride to the beat of this earth and that will make you miss many opportunities. These are the kind of people that say, “Whatever happens, happens”. Do you know how much control you have in what happens ? Sure there are some instances where you have no control at all. However, the majority of events that happen in our lives are dependent upon our actions and choices.

What are you trying to achieve in life ? Are you letting life pass you by because you aren’t doing enough ? When I say do, please believe that I am referring to purpose filled actions.

What is TOO much ? I’m sure there are a few more things that I could add to my life right now that would benefit me greatly. However, the other side of this conversation is that there is such thing as TOO much. However, the “TOO much” part has nothing to do with WHAT you’re doing. It has everything to do with the QUALITY that it is pushed out with. Non-purposeful actions are when you begin to lean towards the doing too much side. Doing tons of things with no purpose behind them is a waste of time and would definitely go into the “TOO much” category. Life is about quality. It’s not about quantity. I know of people who have several businesses, are authors, and are on speaking tours. How are they able to do all that ? Aren’t they doing too much ?

You can only handle what your level in life allows you to. It’s up to you what level you end up on. People who are very successful can handle many things because they have become an expert on pushing out quality on a consistent level. The only way they were able to do that was to not quit and to teach themselves what quality was and what it required them to do. They also know how to balance their lives with rest and personal time. I’ve learned that the reason why most business start-ups don’t make it past the 3 year mark is because the leadership is burned out. They have overworked themselves to near exhaustion or complete exhaustion. At that point, what good is your product if you aren’t even looking at the quality of your well-being (aka health) ? There is nothing wrong with working hard and going after greatness, as long as you are pushing out the quality that matches all that you do.

People who do too much are people who run around acting like a chicken with its head cut off. Do you know why that’s a correct description ? Because a chicken without a head has no idea of direction. Therefore, its actions are blind because there are no purposeful steps.

A person that does too much always takes extra and unneeded steps that could be avoided if they focused in on the purpose and the intent. Have you ever noticed a person that is everywhere and doing everything ? That’s too much. You know why ? Because it shows that you haven’t pinpointed a purpose for you to fulfill. It reminds me of when I log onto Instagram and I look at people’s bio’s. They have like 20 different titles to describe who they are. If you asked them who they are, it would take them an hour because they would have to describe all 20 of those titles.

So what’s the conclusion of all of this ? Whatever you do, let there be a purpose behind it. God has put us here on this earth to accomplish great things. Don’t waste your time with people, places, and things that will keep you stagnant instead of moving forward. Don’t be the person that does too much. Be the person that is doing all that you need to do to achieve all that you want to. Reach for the stars and realize that with God all things are possible.
