Do What He Said

Do What He Said

Obeying God

I was on the phone with a coaching client yesterday afternoon and I began to pour out to her about my beginnings in ministry. I told her to embrace the process of establishing your track record. This is the most important thing that many people despise because everyone wants to blow up and be seen. The problem with this is that this hinders us from establishing that track record.

I remember waking up the first day that I got in front of that online camera back in October 2012. No one was doing what I was doing in online ministry at least in any capacity that matched mine. I’m not saying that I was the very first woman in online ministry to do Google Hangouts. Not at all. However, online streaming via video wasn’t BIG yet. We didn’t have Instagram Live, Periscope, or Facebook Live. However, I knew that this was something that I should partake in. I began streaming live on YouTube on a consistent basis to a crowd of 0 people. No that is not a typo. That is the real number. Then the number grew but probably not to the number you were thinking about. It grew to about 5 consistent strangers.

I didn’t have the mindset of most. You see I was home by myself on a daily basis with no people supporting me around me. I didn’t have a mentor at the time because no one was doing online streaming via YouTube at that time. So I just decided to jump right in. I kept on being consistent because the way people would find me would be by my track record. They would find me by watching the video that was my first video wearing a geometric dress and berry colored lipstick with my young face.

I didn’t go live in front of that camera because I wanted to be seen. I got in front of that camera because I knew what God told me to do. That’s how simple my conviction was. How simple is your conviction? You see many of us overcomplicate us doing what God told us to do. We have 300 things in the way and we just need to look straight at the target – the assignment at hand. If your life is too cluttered to do what God asked you to do, that is a problem that you need to observe immediately.

We just need to do what He said – at least the first step and watch Him unfold the rest. We don’t know the rest of the picture. We don’t know all of God’s plans. You need to let go wanting to know everything at all times. God doesn’t work like that because He requires trust. You need to trust Him. That’s the real problem at hand. This is a trust issue with us having full confidence even when we can’t see the full picture. You’ve got to just get started.

It’s time to get started and build our track records. The people are coming but we need to start laying the foundation so that when they come, they have something to come to. God told Noah to build an ark. The flood was coming. The animals needed somebody to be the solution to the flood that would cover the earth. Noah didn’t wait until the flood came because what he was building would need to be built before it would come to the earth.
Stop waiting until the people come to get things in order. Your faith is seen when you do things in advance of the things you can see.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1 KJV)

The Bible says in the Book of Hebrews that faith is literally the substance of that which we hope for. Substance can be also seen as “matter” or something that you can touch. What does this mean for us? Faith isn’t faith unless there is substance set forth in the earth. You’ve got to do something in order for faith to manifest.

It’s time to work.

Proverbs 12: I’m Leaving the Swamp

Proverbs 12: I’m Leaving the Swamp

You can’t find firm footing in a swamp, but life rooted in God stands firm. (Proverbs 12:3 Message)

This scripture reminds me of my writing “Build My House”. I can’t stress enough how important it is to have a good foundation. The reason why I chose this particular scripture for this post is because of the wording.

It says, “You can’t find firm footing in a swamp”. For many it seems almost too obvious that a swamp would never provide firm footing. However, in life, many are blinded by society and its ways. People try to find security in the most unstable things.

I looked up the word swamp.

Swamp: an area of low-lying, uncultivated ground where water collects; a bog or marsh

Look at the words used: low-lying, uncultivated

When you build your life on anything else BUT God, your life will match these words. No matter how things look, the inward man is living life in a swamp. You have the mansion but you’re still in the swamp. You’ve got the relationship and the kids but you’re still in the swamp.

Low-lying: at low altitude above sea level

Some of us are stuck at a level far below where God desires for us to be. Low-lying areas are prone to floods because of how close they are to sea level. I see people who are constantly being flooded with so many things because they have not let God be their rock and their foundation. They are fighting life on their own and barely surviving. They are barely above water. In fact, they are living a “Low-lying” life in the swamp.

Question: Are you living below where God has called you?

How many of us are trying to live life like everybody else because we’re scared to step out from the swamp. You can become comfortable in your swamp living. However, things die in the swamp. When you see a swamp, it’s not filled with flowers or a display of life. Matter of fact, it’s quite the opposite.

The swamp = death. Yes. It’s that straight forward. It’s a position of “being stuck”.

The swamp can become familiar ground.

It can become so familiar that when God calls you higher, your immediate reaction is fear. However, God is calling you higher and your life must be rooted in God.

You need to breathe. You need to come up to a place that is filled with life and potential. You need to leave swamp “nouns”: people, places, and things.

Things that have left you stuck: It’s time to leave them. Things that have you in “flood” situations, it’s time to leave them. God is calling you higher.

We know that a swamp life is: uncultivated

Yet, what does it mean to be rooted?: established, grounded, deeply planted

Does this mean that your life will be perfect? No. However, facing life with God on your side will make you a well-planted vessel.

I’ll leave you with some scriptures that remind all of us that living a God-rooted life is well worth it!

Psalm 1:3

He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.

Jeremiah 17:7-8

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.”

Matthew 7:24

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

Luke 6:46-48

“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.”

The Power of Your Will

The Power of Your Will

As a child, my mother took the time to read stories to us during the day or before bed. Looking back over my childhood, there were a few stories that have provided even deeper meaning now as an adult. If I had to pick one story in particular that has lighted a passion in me, it is the story of The Little Red Hen. Read the story below and following I will jump into today’s teaching on the power of your will!

One day as the Little Red Hen was scratching in a field, she found a grain of wheat.

“This wheat should be planted,” she said. “Who will plant this grain of wheat ?”

“Not I,” said the Duck.
“Not I,” said the Cat.
“Not I,” said the Dog.

“Then I will,” said the Little Red Hen. And she did.
Soon the wheat grew to be tall and yellow.

“The wheat is ripe,” said the Little Red Hen. “Who will cut the wheat ?”

“Not I,” said the Duck.
“Not I,” said the Cat.
“Not I.” said the Dog.

“Then I will,” said the Little Red Hen. And she did.

When the wheat was cut, the Little Red Hen said, “Who will thresh this wheat ?”
“Not I,” said the Duck.
“Not I,” said the Cat.
“Not I,” said the Dog.

“Then I will,” said the Little Red Hen.’ And she did.
When the wheat was all threshed, the Little Red Hen said, “Who’ll take this wheat to the mill?”
“Not I,” said the Duck.
“Not I,” said the Cat.
“Not I,” said the Dog.

“Then I will,” said the Little Red Hen. And she did.

She took the wheat to the mill and had it ground into flour. Then she said,
“Who will make this flour into bread ?”

“Not I,” said the, Duck.
“Not I,” said the Cat.
“Not I,” said the Dog.

“Then I will,” said the Little Red Hen. And she did.
She made and baked the bread. Then she said, “Who will eat this bread ?”

“Oh! I will,” said the Duck.
“And I will,” said the Cat.
“And I will,” said the Dog.

“No, no!” said the Little Red Hen. “I will do that.” And she did.

I’m noticing that my writings are turning more into teachings. How I would talk to you face to face is how I write. So let me take this time to encourage your spirit. I believe that for many of you, you are tired of living life at the same level. You are hungry for the next level. To satisfy that hunger you must have the mentality of The Hen. Upon taking on this mentality, I’ve been able to live life with more purpose now than I have ever done in the past. Let’s look at 5 key steps that will help you become a producer of greatness.

1. Identify Your Grain of Wheat

In the beginning of the story, the hen begins by scratching the ground. She doesn’t know what she will find but she’s putting for effort. She comes upon a grain of wheat. The hen is a resourceful chicken and treasures the grain. All you need is a grain of wheat to carry forth the will of God in your life. All you need is an opportunity, a door, an interview, a meeting, ect. So many people despise the grain of wheat in their lives. However, it’s the grain that is the beginning seed for the greatness God desires to enlarge within you. Some of you may be saying that your grain is taking too long and that you have been working with your grain of wheat for too long. The moment you begin to despise where God has placed you, no matter what actions you dictate upon that you have already cancelled whatever potential God has set forth. You will never see the Hen despising the process nor the starting point. You have to see it as just that: a starting point. The Hen found that grain of wheat but she knew that it was not the end. There was something that was going to come out of this piece of wheat. The next step was to begin the process.

2. Make your process a process of purpose

I’ve come to find that many go through steps and tasks but there is no purpose behind it. Some are just doing whatever you want. People are throwing steps together in sloppy format and order and wasting time. The hen saw the grain of wheat and committed herself to the process for the end to come to pass. If you are a child of God, you have a relationship with Jesus Christ. This relationship allows you to have communication with your Heavenly Father. As you pray and seek the face of God and surround yourself around believers, God will present you with steps. I don’t carry forth a step unless it’s been mandated by God. For some, it’s what you read in a magazine. It’s what you saw someone else do. Now, I’m not discounting their actions but even if the most successful person gave me instructions, I would still pray on it. Some of us are running on the recommendations of others and not the will of God. My process has to have a purpose. The Hen begin to lay out the process in steps. We see this when she presents several questions. The wheat had to be planted, cut, threshed and then the flour had to go through a process. Some of you have been saying that you have not heard the voice of God. I’m going to get very serious with you for a moment.

If you are not hearing the voice of God, it’s not that God is silent. Something is disconnected on your end. You have to check a few things.

1. The consistency of your prayer life

2. The quality of your prayer life

3. The passion within your prayer life

4. The quality & quantity of voices that surround you outside of the voice of God

5. The lack of faith present in your prayers & the cloud of doubt when you pray that you will not hear God’s voice

6. The order of your prayer in that you’re not talking to God but with God (two-way conversation)

7. (Most Important) Not giving the Holy Spirit the opportunity to move within your prayer time

Many people are never hearing the voice of God and due to that they are walking forth into the process with reason and not faith. There is a difference between these two. Reason is your natural and carnal deductions of what will work best. Faith is when you’re walking according to the Word of God and what He has spoken for you to do. So don’t blame God if something is not working. Even if the enemy tries to rip you away from the will of God, you are still in control. Some of us have given our process to the hands of the enemy and we have given up hope. This is why you need will within the will of God. However, many of us have allowed other people’s lack of participation in our purpose or lives derail us from the manifestation of the abundance of God in our lives.

3. Know that your “I will” is not based on your “Not I”

I’ve seen so many people quit on their purpose because of lack. What I may say may be brutal but you need to hear it. If you quit on what God has given you it’s not because of what was not there. When you quit on your God given purpose it is because of your lack of faith in God. Now before you say something, hear me out. Too many people have given more excuses than seeds of faith. Have you not remembered the scriptures? Many of us talk all day and we post scriptures and quotes all day and then the test of lack comes. You don’t have enough people. The people start leaving you. You had help and now you don’t. You had the money and now it’s gone. You had the support and now your audience and fans have disappeared. Your purpose is not limited to outside participation. I don’t care what every outside force and presence says. This is why you have to get some fight within you and some substance. I’m starting to think that too many people are resting in the word of a friend, family member, and coworker and not resting in the Word of God.

When I started my women’s ministry in 2012, I was by myself. I had a few people approach me to help me. Some came on and some left. I had a team of 30 women in 2014. By the end of the year, we were back down to 10 people. Now, I’m not condemning or saying anything negative about those that left. Many had things to tend to and the task on the team was too much for them to handle. What I’m saying is this: You can’t stop. You can’t use lack or not having what you THINK you need to get it done. If God said He would get it done, why are you looking at what is NOT there? Why do we as humans look at the lack and then use that as a reason for it not to happen. When we look at the bible, we see every idea of lack and God took care of the lack.

The hen did not have the help. Listen, I’ve brought people along with my purpose of spreading the gospel. On our team now, we have a team that pushes hard of the thing of God. However, if they all walked away tomorrow, the purpose would not stop. This is why we have to stay prayed up. I know you post about how you pray but I’ll know if you really are praying because when you are tempted to quit you won’t. Listen, God is waiting on you to run to Him. If you have given up before and you don’t want that to happen again, start trusting in God. I don’t want you to ever again quit. You’ve been through too much and God has done too much for you to give up on His will that He wants to do in you. I’m all for bringing people into what God is doing but I won’t count on them for the purpose to be fulfilled. I’ll never forget what I said a year ago on my Facebook page. Many of us have attached our purpose to people (as far as carrying it out). Due to our attachments to these people, the moment they leave, your purpose has walked out the door. Just like the Hen, no matter how many “Not I” responses you get, you have to be like the Hen. Let’s look at the power of this hen’s mentality.

4. God’s will is manifested when our will is set in motion

When I was a child, my mother read me this story because she wanted to teach me about determination. When we are little we are taught to have trust in what we can do. When we come to Christ, we are come to know that we need to have trust in God.

Let’s look at what the Hen says after she asks the duck, cat, and dog if they will join her in the process.

“Then I will,” said the Little Red Hen. And she did.

Now here is probably the most important point out of all of the points I have made. Everything really boils down to this principle. Many of us will say “I will”. However, it’s not until you do it that things begin to happen. Words are awesome. You guys know that I’m big into confessions because your words will manifest what you see in the natural. However, the thing about confessions are that it the starting point but never the ending point. What I say is the car. It begins to shape the vehicle to where I desire to go. However, your actions are the gas. We can speak and confess and as we speak our world and our perspective begin to change. However, if your actions aren’t carried out, it won’t become permanently sealed. I can confess that I’m blessed coming and coming out. I can confess that all of my needs are met. I can confess that I’m blessed in the city and in the field. I can confess that I will never experience lack and that abundance is in my house. However, I was presented with an opportunity to put my “I will” into action. Now here is the crazy thing. The dog, the cat, and the duck all had the same opportunity yet the hen is the one who put her will into action. Let me give you an example of putting my will into action.

I confess everyday that wealth is in my house. I have the heart of the giver. I want to be able to write people’s mortgages off and help other’s bring their dreams to pass. I want to bless families for Christmas and bless single mothers and fathers. However, my finances have to be in order. Now, I have been confessing but one day I was presented with the opportunity to get my finances in line. My parents have been telling me for a while that I really have no excuse to spend and not budget like I do. I was not being a good steward of what I had. I was not tithing and I was just doing whatever I wanted with my finances. Well a few weeks ago, my church announced that they were hosting Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. I had been through many of his teachings before and I had watched many of his talks but my will was not set forth into action. I told myself that this would be the last week that I would ever mismanage what God had given me. However, then lack entered my mind.

I began to think about the following:

1. I have so many things to do, I don’t think I’ll be able to make the night teachings

2. It costs $77. I could use that $77 on that new dress or on another project for my business

3. I already know about managing my finances. (What a joke!)

I commend every single one of our members at Revival Fellowship Church who signed up for Financial Peace University. However, I commend even more those that decided to actually come to the classes and still come. It’s one thing to say “I will”. However, we have to be like the Hen when it says: “And she did”. That class was the opportunity and I took it. During the class (and it’s not even over), I have learned to do things with my money that I had forsaken for so long. Many of us pray and declare for God to move but it’s not until we put some works behind our faith that God can do what He desires. God can not move until faith is set forth. God is waiting on you to prove that you’re serious about your confession.

5. Don’t feel obligated to provide for people who don’t want to take part in the process

Didn’t the ending sound familiar to something many people do in our lives the moment God manifests something in the natural for us? The family member that doesn’t want nothing to do with God but wants everything God has given. The animals did not want to help the hen but once they saw the end, they wanted in. However, the Hen was smart. She did not give in to people who want the provision without the provider.

We will now shift our focus to look at some key factors that will help believers in walking in the will and set forth action.

1. Place yourself in an environment where others are not just confessing but walking in what they confess

When I signed up for this class, I was around people who also wanted to do what I wanted to do. They had put their will in action. This environment was shaping me and my thoughts. This is why when you surround yourself around people who talk all day but are just a bunch of fluff, their faith is not in operation. They can call it faith all day but let’s look at a key scripture. Let’s look at James 2: 20-24.

“But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness:and he was called the Friend of God. Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.”

So what is James teaching us?  James is teaching us that you can’t get the bread like the hen without doing something like the hen. Some Christians will die with a grain of wheat in their hands. Now I would never wish this upon anyone but I can hear it in how some talk. Every time you talk about what is not happening and what is not going on, you are removing the faith for you to walk in the power of God that He has placed inside of you. It says in James 2 that Abraham believer God. You walk in the righteousness of God when you believe and then walk in what you believe. You can’t walk in what you do not believe. That’s the reason why many people are not where they desire themselves to be. I refuse to be bound to the doubt of the world. I refuse to be held back by lack or not having what I need. I refuse to be bound to the tricks of the enemy. I refuse to kill my purpose by not walking forward. I refuse to confess but not walk because of doubt. What are you scared of?

If I was face to face with you, I would look you in your eyes and ask you: What are you scared of? I used to be held back by fear. I used to be scared of what may happen if something did not go right. I used to count up the costs. Then I realized that God is with me.  The purpose of confession is not to poof something out of thin air. Your actions bring forth the manifestation but your confession establishes the direction of your faith. So when I feel like I’m going to quit and my will is being weakened, I confess the word of God. If I was teaching this to a crowd, I would say that those of you that are ready to do the will of God and no longer be held back stand up. If you’re reading this and you’re in your bedroom, I dare you to stand up off your chair or bed and say this to yourself:

Confess this:

I will do the will of the Father for my life. I boldly declare that when I am presented with the opportunity that I will not choke. I will not stop. I will not quit. I have faith in God. I have the living Word of God on the inside of me. Nothing shall tear me away from the will of God. I cast down every plan of the enemy and of fear to tempt me to walk away from the will of God.

Now read the scripture passage below. In Romans, they spoke of the trials that they faced as they spread the gospel. Their spreading of the gospel was them applying their grain of wheat and carrying forth the process of doing the will of God in their lives. Listen to their response to all they were facing.

Romans 8:31-39

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.

Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised— who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written,

 “For your sake we are being killed all the day long;

we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

From this story of the Hen, I want you to take this with you.

The Hen dedicated herself to the development of the wheat into flour and then to bread.

When I honor the purpose and put my will behind the process, I can celebrate because I will receive the provision.

The Power of Affirmations with Vision Words

The Power of Affirmations with Vision Words

If you’ve joined in with me for my #LoveYourBrand Challenge then you know that this month I’m focusing on the power of loving who God has made you to be. When you love yourself, your ministry and/or your business will greatly improve. This month I talked to the owner and creator of Vision Words, a small business that creates affirmation based sticky notes you can put anywhere in your environment. Martha Banks-Hall created this amazing business and I wanted her to share with you all her answers to my questions that I had for her.

Genesis: What does the word “Affirmation” mean to you?

Martha: To me the word affirmation means a statement that declares truth into my life. Stating a fact or belief; asserting it strongly. Affirmations are tools that we can use to significantly change every area of our life. If you stated a positive affirmation such as “I can Achieve Greatness” outloud every day for 30 days imagine how your mindset would change!

Genesis: During one of our conversations, you spoke on being “intentional” and “intentional living”. Can you go deeper into what that means and how people can apply this mindset to their lives?

Martha: Intentional living is something that many of us need to focus on in order to overcome obstacles that we find ourselves complaining about. For example if you wake up with the intention that it is going to be great day and hold on to that intention; then no matter what happens during that day, you are able to look at it with the eyes of positivity. This changes how you react and in turn can change the outcome of the situations you encounter.

What is your intention for your life? Are you just living day by day, letting life happen to you or are you being intentional in your thoughts and plans and actions? Do you set goals and plans, do you intend to be in ‘different place’ next year than you’re in today? Not because you need something better but because you want to grow as an individual.

The intention with which you live determines the outcome of your life. Thinking about things before you do them what is the real reason why you do things; your thoughts and actions.

It’s just like the famous saying goes: If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail. Set plans, set goals and even if you don’t reach them right away they steer you into the direction of the result you are seeking. This is much better than just waking around aimlessly in life. You’ll be surprised of the outcomes in your life when you live intentionally, on purpose, with a desired goal and target.

Genesis: Why do you think people don’t go after their dreams? How do affirmations and speaking life change that?

Martha: There are a few reasons why people don’t go after their dreams: fear, doubt, pre-conceived mindset (such as what your parents taught you “that will never work”, “that doesn’t happen to people like us”) as well as procrastination, laziness, complacency.

Using affirmations help to change your mindset and whatever negative beliefs you’ve had. Using affirmations empowers you with the words that will sink into your spirit and grow and bear fruit. Words have a way of sticking with you! Those words as you believe them and speak them to yourself will give you the power to change your mindset to positive thoughts and beliefs.

Genesis: When you think of combatting negativity that keeps you from going after your dreams and you think about the words that you speak in your mind to yourself and about yourself think on this…

Martha: In Ephesians when Paul tells us to put on the full armour of God…  The only Offensive piece of Armour is the Sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. THE WORD!! Words are what we are to use to attack the enemy, the doubt, the fear, the laziness. Your words are soo important and powerful!

Genesis: What advice would you give those trying to start a business or go after their dreams?

Martha: I just heard Denzel Washington say something last week that I have been putting into practice since I first had the idea for Vision Words last year:

“Without commitment, you’ll never start but more importantly without consistency you’ll never finish!”

If you have a dream and an idea for a business that is great! What is even better is actually executing on the idea and dream to bring it to fruition. GO FOR IT! In this day and age we have all the resources and information we could possibly need. With just Google and YouTube alone you are equipped to build an Empire! Work at it, make it a reality and don’t let anything discourage you! So many times we think we need to have things perfect before we put our product / business out into the public. One of my favorite sayings has been Progress Over Perfection!  Having something done that you can make better later is better than having nothing at all! (Obviously always strive for Excellence but you understand my meaning). Move confidently towards your dream and work at it each and every day consistently and you are sure to see results and success!

#LedToLead Serve First. Lead Second.

#LedToLead Serve First. Lead Second.

1 SAMUEL 16:7: But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.

Sometimes we think that our promotion is tied up to being seen. However, God is looking for those that are pure in their hearts and are willing to serve Him no matter what. Do you have the heart of a shepherd or are you too focused on being seen? God is looking at our hearts. David wasn’t even looking to be a King. He was a servant first. God is the one who made him a King.

10 Encouraging Scriptures for Pastors & Leaders

10 Encouraging Scriptures for Pastors & Leaders

Leading is a full time job. It involves so many layers including encouraging others. Here are 10 scriptures for you to encourage yourself with. We can only pour out to the measure that we ourselves are filled with. You can’t pour out anything from an empty cup. Here are 10 of my favorite scriptures for those in leadership whether it’s in business or in ministry. I pray that you are blessed by these.
